Redesigning Transportation in the Metal Fabrication Industry
Dispatchr
Dispatchr is a systems design project focused on improving transportation workflows within the metal fabrication industry. Through extensive field research, factory visits, stakeholder interviews, and systems analysis, we identified inefficiencies in shipment verification and documentation. The result is an integrated handheld device that streamlines logistics through digital tracking, document management, and real-time verification.



Metal fabrication is a complex industry involving multiple stakeholders, processes, and logistics systems. From raw material processing to final delivery, every stage depends on efficient coordination between manufacturers, transporters, suppliers, and clients. To better understand these operations, our team conducted field visits across multiple fabrication workshops and factories, observing day-to-day workflows and speaking directly with industry professionals.



After conducting site visits and interviewing industry professionals, we consolidated our findings through systems mapping and collaborative workshops. By organizing observations, identifying recurring patterns, and connecting relationships between different operational challenges, we were able to narrow our focus to the areas that had the greatest impact on the overall workflow.




To avoid solving surface-level symptoms, we mapped the underlying relationships between operational challenges. This analysis revealed transportation as the highest-impact opportunity for improving efficiency across the system.


Insights from early concepts led to the development of Dispatchr, a unified handheld device designed specifically for transportation workflows.




Dispatchr combines document management, shipment verification, barcode scanning, printing, and digital workflows into a single handheld device, reducing friction across the transportation process.
